You may remember some months back the government had massive proposals to relax the planning laws. Well they have brought in a watered dowwn scheme, which has taken effect from May 2013, .This will be only for 3 years. Under the Neighbour Consultation Scheme you will be able to extend 8m single storey for a detached property and 6metres for terrace and semis. There is one caveat: Providing your neighbour does not object. So if you are a rmid terrace property and you want a 6m extension, your neighbour both sides must not object, and what is the likely hood that your neighbour will not object? It will hopefully simplify the process and allow larger extensions than currently permitted, but we are yet to see how this new scheme goes down.
